the Life Boat project

A lifeboat rescues people from a sinking ship. That's exactly what this project does.
LIFE BOAT is a place where people can step out of crisis and into something better — a space built on friendship, dignity, and the quiet belief that everyone deserves a hand up, not just a handout.
Because here's what we've learned: people on the streets in Pietermaritzburg often need connection more than they need a meal.
At 7 Levy Street, right in the city center, we've created somewhere safe to exhale. People come through our doors and can:
-
Choose their own clothes — through a voucher system that puts the power of choice back in their hands
-
Get a haircut, a manicure, or a check-up — small things that say you matter
-
Cook, create, and connect — through cooking lessons, crafts, Bible study, board games, and shared meals
It's our first point of contact — where trust is built and real change begins, as people find their footing and rediscover their place in the world. Not only do sales of Life Boat vouchers make us financially sustainable, it gives the recipient an access point to real support, and gives you, the donor, a traceable way to help without fuelling addiction. (Track your voucher here.)
One of our clients said it best:
"You mean, there will be a place in the city where I will be treated like a human being for a few hours?"
That's why LIFE BOAT exists.
